With
effect from 10 January 2005, Chinese credit
cards will be accepted outside China: in South
Korea, Singapore and Thailand. Previously the
use of the Chinese currency, the yuan, was authorised
only in China.
In January and September 2004, the People's
Bank of China, the Chinese Central bank, had
authorised the use of cards in Hong Kong and
Macao.
Cardholders will be able to use their cards,
bearing the logo of the Chinese card operator
"Unionpay", to withdraw cash from
ATM machines and pay for products and services,
subject however to a ceiling of 5 000 yuans
per day (460 euros).
