The Phoenix Group and its employees are donating £1,426.60 to the Woodland Trust,
following an Environmental Awareness Day on 21 October, held at three of its offices, including Wythall, near Birmingham.
Staff raised funds by dressing down in ‘green’ and selling tickets for their environmental themed raffle. Prizes were kindly donated by local businesses, and included an eco-manager, food baskets, compost box, energy saving bulbs, and complimentary dinner for two. Staff raised £713.30 which was matched pound for pound by Phoenix.
The Wythall site was host to an array of stands over the lunchtime period, all supporting the day’s focus of the 3R’s – Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. Bromsgrove and Redditch Council in partnership with Worcestershire County Council were promoting their ‘Love
Food, Hate Waste’ campaign, which was well received by staff. Ricoh UK Limited were also present, highlighting the eco-friendly printing equipment the Group will be launching later this year as part of the SITSS (Single IT Services Supplier) Programme. And the Woodland Trust shared materials to encourage staff to get outside, and enjoy their local
woodland.
Peter Brown, Waste Awareness Officer from Bromsgrove District Council said “the day was a great opportunity for us to highlight how people can save money and reduce waste by making the most of their food. Tips included using left over foods to make a cheap and tasty meal at the end of the week, and only cooking portion sizes required. It is estimated that a family with children wastes up to £50 per month by throwing away food which could have been eaten if it had been managed better.”
In the grounds at Wythall, a 14ft English Oak (Quercus Robur) was planted and unveiled, as a symbol of the Company’s first environment day. The Oak has long been synonymous with strength, size and longevity and will stand as a reminder to all of the need for
commitment to the environment.
Lucy Symonds, spokesperson for Phoenix Group commented: “We are pleased that group-wide we have had this opportunity to raise awareness of the 3R’s - Reduce, Re-use and Recycle, whilst raising a fantastic amount for the Woodland Trust. The Group is committed to being a responsible business and is keen to reduce its environmental
footprint.”
